ARE BIG FILES BIG PROBLEMS- WHITE PAPER

Posted on Updated on

The Internet has opened new markets, fostered greater competition and redefined the business enterprise. What used to be a corporate office with cubicles of users is now a complex global network of partners, customers, employees and systems- all requiring specific access, control, and security over information asset.

However, while the internet has become indispensable to modern businesses, it has also created some unique challenges. In particular, people have struggled to cope with the sheer amount of data being generated. According to a recent forecast by analysts at IDC, the amount of created around the world in 2011 will approach 2 zettabytes and the size of individual files is also growing. Asides these there are many more problems confronting file sharing and transfer but recently Managed File Transfer (MFT) came to alleviate all of these distribution problems. Over the last few years, the MFT product category has grown and today, many MFT vendors’ offerings resemble frameworks that users can customize and adapt to suit their particular file transfer needs.

CLOUD FEDERATION FOR IDENTITY AND ACCESS SECURITY- WHITE PAPER

Posted on Updated on

Research Director, Sally Hudson and Program Manager Phil Hochmuth talked extensively  about organizations concerns on security and compliance telling the meaning of cloud-based security and its importance.

Today, the shift to a cloud-based enterprise IT architecture is a foregone conclusion for a variety of organizations. As a result, cloud-based security has become a top priority.  This whitepaper talks about the challenges of cloud-based security and identity and access management as well as how  businesses can overcome these challenges.

Organizations were advised to beforehand get prepared to adopt cloud-based authentication services and they must be ready to partner with system implanters and cloud integrators to enable Organisational effectiveness and efficiency.

My point here basically is that we should take into consideration CRM as it is a very interesting field where we learn how to relate with the most complex entity which is human being.

MY REFLECTION ON SOCIOTECHNICAL SYSTEMS

This video is basically what i gained from Dr. Marie’s class on Friday, 31st Jan 2014 on the improvement of existing Socio technical Systems Design or whether to design new systems that will be void of the challenges of the present.

SOCIOTECHNICAL SYSTEMS: FROM DESIGN METHODS TO SYSTEMS ENGINEERING- JOURNAL

Posted on

It is widely accepted that adopting a socio-technical approach to system development leads to systems that are more satisfactory to end users and deliver better value to stakeholders.

Despite this, such approaches are not widely practiced because of the many challenges facing it. The reasons for this were analyzed, stressing some of the problems with the better known socio-technical design methods. Based on this analysis we propose a new pragmatic framework for socio-technical systems engineering (STSE) which builds on the (largely independent) research of groups investigating work design, information systems, computer supported cooperative work, and cognitive systems engineering.

STSE bridges the traditional gap between organizational change and system development using two main types of activity: sensitization and awareness; and constructive engagement. A set of interdisciplinary research problems that addresses how to apply socio-technical approaches in a cost-effective way, and how to facilitate the integration of STSE with existing systems and software engineering approaches were addressed. (Baxter & Sommerville, 2011)

Despite all these interventions, the STSD still lags behind in so many intended functions, why? Its high time researchers stopped focusing on the known and dig deeper into how best to tackle the problems.

SOCIOTECHNICAL DESIGN- JOURNAL

Posted on Updated on

Socio-technical design is concerned with the direct participation of end-users in the information system design process. The system includes the network of users, developers, information technology at hand, and the environments in which the system will be used and supported while the process includes the design of the human-computer interface and patterns of human-computer interaction.

This stands in opposition to traditional system or software engineering design methods that has its focus exclusively on the activities of system engineers who design the computational functions and features of a new system, and who use computer-aided design tools and notations to capture and formalize the results of such a design process.

The prescription for design of an STS via user participation or involvement by itself will not yield changes in the way a given information system is intended to support its users, their workflow, or their workplace. Such participation is necessary but not sufficient to affect changes that address the political order of an organization or its institutional surrounds. Instead, reinvention and transformation of existing organizational information systems and work practices is central to achieving radical change.

Reinvention seeks to discover new ways of doing established work practices, while transformation seeks to rearrange workflow, staffing, and related resource configurations. Both reinvention and transformation are most effective when participatory throughout their trajectories and most likely to fail when simply assigned or delegated by others that are not part of existing work practices.
